Project 2010's Program One of the key components of Project 2010 is community service. Though there is a minimum of fifty hours of student community service, the district has put a system in place to capture all of the student's volunteer hours and reflect them on each student's transcript. The high school guidance counselors, AVID teachers and tutors, and other not-for-profit and organization resources are working with students and parents/guardians to promote an understanding of the importance of community service for the individual student and for what one student called "the entire planet".
Project 2010 will ensure that prospective students, who are interested and committed to attending specific institutions, will exceed the admission criteria of that institution. For example, criteria of graduating in the top five percent of their graduating class, excelling in rigorous college preparatory courses and achieving and ACT test score above 27.
Project 2010 students will be able to participate in extensive Advanced Placement courses with fees paid for by community donors through the St. Louis Public Schools Foundation.
Each student will take the PLAN test and will also have peer mentoring on analyzing his/her scores. Analyzing the PLAN test results is just one of the topics of the quarterly parent/guardian Project 2010 workshops at the College Resource Meetings.
ACT student preparation is a major part of Project 2010. The rigorous academic courses are reinforced with individual and group year round tutoring.
In the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009, Project 2010 students will take the ACT test, enroll in challenging courses and continue to interact with partner institutions' representatives through campus visits, communication with alumni and admissions counselors visits.
In the fall of 2009, Project 2010 will continue to encourage students to take Advanced Placement courses and to actively participate in the College Resource Meetings.
Individualized assistance will be provided to parents/guardians to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ((FAFSA) by January 1, 2010.
Regular meetings and reports to governmental entities, the business community and the not-for-profit partners will also be provided by the Project 2010 staff.
Project 2010 will ensure that every St. Louis Public High School principal and counselor will be knowledgeable about the strengths of the partner institutions (colleges and universities).
It is anticipated that this initiative will be a successful methodology to enable students to fulfill their potential by attending supportive high institutions of education. We anticipate this initiative will be replicable and that students will return to be role models for the younger classes at the St. Louis Public Schools.
Colleges and Universities will benefit by increasing their racial diversity and their socio-economic diversity.
Thank you in advance for your support in making a difference.
